The Question We Get Asked Most
"Should we use Odoo or QuickBooks?" is the most common question from small and medium businesses in Malé looking to move beyond spreadsheets. Both are legitimate tools. Both have their place. The right answer depends on where your business is now and where it is going.
This comparison is written specifically for businesses operating in the Maldives — not a generic global comparison.

Where QuickBooks Wins
Ease of use. QuickBooks was designed for business owners who are not accountants. The interface is clean, the language is plain, and most people can get basic bookkeeping running within a day.
Accountant familiarity. If your accountant has global experience, they are probably already familiar with QuickBooks. This reduces onboarding time.
Low upfront commitment. You can start a QuickBooks subscription without an implementation project. Pay monthly and cancel if it is not working.
Where Odoo Wins
Built for operational complexity. If your business has inventory, purchase orders, payroll, projects, or a point of sale — Odoo manages all of these in a single platform. QuickBooks does accounting well but relies on third-party apps for everything else.
MIRA compliance out of the box. With Odoo properly configured for Maldives, your GST return data is pulled directly from transactions. QuickBooks requires manual tax code setup and careful discipline to get the same result.
Total cost of ownership. QuickBooks seems cheaper until you add the inventory add-on, the payroll module, and the third-party integrations. Odoo Community is free. Odoo Enterprise includes all modules for one price.
Local support. When something breaks or you need to customise a workflow, you need someone who understands both the software and the Maldivian business context. Odoo has local partners here. QuickBooks does not.
The Real Decision Framework
Choose QuickBooks if:
- You have fewer than 10 staff
- Your business is primarily service-based with no inventory
- You are not yet GST-registered
- You want something running within a week with no implementation project
Choose Odoo if:
- You have 10+ staff or expect to grow there within 2 years
- You have inventory, procurement, or manufacturing processes
- You are GST-registered and want automated MIRA reporting
- You want one platform instead of five different apps
- You want local support when things go wrong
The Hybrid Approach: Start with QuickBooks, Migrate to Odoo
Some businesses use QuickBooks as a starter system and migrate to Odoo once they hit operational complexity. This is a valid approach — but plan the migration properly. A poorly executed Odoo migration from QuickBooks creates more problems than it solves.
If you know you will eventually need Odoo's capabilities, it is often more efficient to start there from the beginning.
